From the e-Activity, provide three examples of unintentional security threats and three examples of intentional security threats. Determine which of these examples puts an organization at a higher risk and explain why.

A threat is something that could potentially harm an organization’s assets (Shoemaker, 2012).  For example, three unintentional threats are: an employee accidentally clicking “Format” on the “C” drive, deleting a file within the Windows directory folder, and/or deleting a shared file by accident.  Intentional threats would be: hacking a web sever to steal data, launching a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, and sending someone an email with a link that executes a virus on their computer.

Intentional threats put an organization at higher risk.  If an organization’s computers were hacked and became bots of a botnet, they could be used to launch denial of service (DoS) attack against other networks.  In addition, if an employee accidentally clicked on a link in an email they thought was legitimate, it could be used to launch a virus on the organization’s network that exfiltrates social security numbers, birthdates, and other private data of customers in the organization’s database systems.  These examples of intentional threats make it critical that an organization and its employees must fully understand the risks that these threats pose, should they actually occur, and develop ways to mitigate them.

Propose three advantages and three disadvantages of using a central repository. Determine which advantages are the most important to an organization and which disadvantage is the most limiting to an organization.

Three advantages of using a central repository are: modeling building by multiple employees at the same time, a central storage location where everyone can access models being worked on, and model reuse (Lamsweerde, 2009).  The advantages that are most important to an organization are: sharing of files and model reuse.  Sharing files allows multiple analysts to work on model building at the same time (Lamsweerde, 2009).   With model reuse, an organization can use portions of a source model to define parts of a new model.  This allows additional parts of the new model to be obtained from the model reuse (Lamsweerde, 2009).

Three disadvantages of a central repository are: maintaining consistency control of files, conflicting opinions about designs, and controlling deadlines.  The disadvantages that are most limiting to an organization are: maintaining consistency control and managing deadlines.  When multiple analysts are working on the same model building project, there has to be a way to control baseline versions so that two or more analysts are not working on and checking in versions of the same model at the same time, resulting in conflicts.  Without a way to control deadlines of when models need to be finished, analysts could be working on models indefinitely and never finishing with them.  Having a deadline forces analysts to develop and finish a model in time for it to be included in the project.
